Let's take a closer look at the demand for all the different design styles.
The graph below shows how much each design style sold in 2019. We can see that there are 4 styles with the majority of sales: Outline, Glyph, Flat, and Filled Outline. These main styles make up to 93% of total sales in 2019.
The other styles in order of sales are Badge, 3D, Handdrawn, Smooth, Long Shadow, Cartoon, Photorealistic, and Pixel. All these secondary styles make up to 7% of the total sales in 2019.
Let's see now how the sales changed over time, from 2017 to 2019, for all styles.
We can observe how the main design styles have maintained their high sales, with a slight decrease. The only exception is Filled Outline, which increased by 21%.
Among the secondary styles, Smooth increased the most, by 96%. The same happened with the Handdrawn and Badge style, which increased by 32% and 20% respectively. All the other secondary styles have decreased by a lot, which is really a big flag that customers don't want those.
Important ideas here:
1. For good sales, choose to draw icons in Outline, Glyph, Flat, and Filled Outline styles.
2. Especially, focus on Filled Outline - it is getting more popular.
3. If you want to focus on the niche markets, choose the Smooth style, Handdrawn or Badge.
4. Do not draw icons in these styles because there is no market for them: Long Shadow, Pixel, Photorealistic, Cartoon.
